Seven Manageable Ways to Take Control of Your Health

There could be many reasons why you need to take control of your health. Maybe your health care provider recently told you that you need to lose some weight. Maybe you’ve experienced some health issues that are prompting this change. Maybe you’ve had trouble sleeping lately. Or maybe it’s just time to get things in gear. Whatever it may be, changing your lifestyle and improving your health can seem daunting — and even impossible.

But taking control of your health doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy yourself while doing so. It doesn’t mean you’re forced into a life of meal prepping, provider visits, or excruciating gym sessions.

There are simple changes you can incorporate into your day, to get yourself — and your body — back on track. By making small yet important changes each and every day, you will start regaining control of your health.

Improving your health is a long-term goal. But let’s start with the short-term goals, which can help you work towards your long-term goal in the future.

  1. Eat breakfast every morning. Get into the habit of making time for breakfast every morning. The trick is to find something you enjoy eating. This will help breakfast not feel like just another chore. Try this fresh-fruit smoothie and substitute the fruit options with your favorite fruit.
  2. Drink more water. Purchase a refillable water bottle, and aim to fill it up a few times per day. According to the CDC, drinking water can help to manage body weight and reducing caloric intake.
  3. Stretch those limbs. You don’t have to be active for hours each day, but you should learn to stretch and try to incorporate stretching into your day. This helps keep your body moving and your blood flowing (Mayo Clinic, 2017).
  4. Get your rest. Make sure you’re getting eight hours of sleep every night. Not quite there? Try setting your bedtime an hour before you typically get in bed. Put your phone on “do not disturb” and open your favorite book.
  5. Wheat > white. At the grocery store, choose wheat products over white bead products. Whole-wheat flour is higher in fiber, vitamin B6, folic acid, and more. This simple change can significantly increase the daily nutrients you consume.
  6. Manage your stress. You may think that stress has nothing to do with your weight or health, but high stress levels can suppress your immune system. Next time you feel overwhelmed, try taking 10 deep breaths before returning to your activity.
  7. Find what works for you. Everyone is different. Someone may move at a faster pace than you, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t progressing. Try different recipes, habits, and methods to find what works for you.

Keep in mind that doing something is better than doing nothing. Every time you make a healthy decision, recognize yourself for making the smart choice. For more ways to stay healthy, check out this recent blog.
